2nd Lieutenant or Lieutenant

With William once again being fit for duty, the War Office did not want to lose an officer, as their ranks were seriously depleted by this period of the war, and he was promoted from 2nd Lieutenant to Lieutenant, which appeared in the London Gazette on 1st July 1917.

However, there was considerable confusion with William’s actual rank from 1st July 1917 which is documented in Appendix 2.
